The Mid-Year Freak Out Tag

The Mid-year freak out

I’ve seen this tag floating around, most recently on Scorpio Book Dreams, and thought it would be fun to review the past six months’ reading. Without further ado…

    • What is the best book that you’ve read so far in 2018?
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. An absolute feat of beautiful writing, setting and characterisation. Such a treat.

    • What has been your favourite sequel of the first half of the year?
I haven’t read many sequels this year, so it can only be Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas. I’m not loving the series as much as A Court of Thorns and Roses, but I’m still interested to see where it’s going to go. If only for Dorian Havilliard.
    • Is there a new release that you haven’t read yet but you’re really excited for?
Meet Me at the Museum by Anne Youngson. I’m excited to read this but have the impression that it’s a cosy winter read, so I’m waiting patiently!
    • What is your most anticipated release for the second half of the year?
It has to be Transcription, Kate Atkinson’s much-anticipated new novel. The first chapter was marvellous and early reviews are glowing, as you would expect.
    • What is your biggest disappointment so far?
See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt. I fully expected to love this but I really, really did not.
    • What is your biggest surprise so far?
The People Vs Tech by Jamie Bartlett. I did not expect to like a book about tech and politics so much. This was surprisingly accessible and absolutely fascinating.
    • Who is your favourite new to you, or debut, author?
Sarah Vaughan. I devoured Anatomy of a Scandal back in February and can’t wait to read more from Sarah.
    • Who is your favourite fictional crush from this year?
Kaspar Godman from The Toymakers, both Kell and Rhy from A Darker Shade of Magic (why not?) and, obviously, Dorian from Throne of Glass.
    • Who is your new favourite character?
Ia Pendilly from All Rivers Run Free by Natasha Carthew. See why here!
    • A book that made you cry?
The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale. Please, if you’ve read it, DM me or something. I have a lot of feelings and nobody to yell them at.
    • A book that made you happy?
The oh-so-lovely The Cottingley Secret by Hazel Gaynor.
    • Your favourite book to movie/TV show that you’ve seen so far?
Oh my God, Annihilation. It was so great. Go watch it now.
    • What is your favourite post that you’ve written so far this year?
The blog tour review of All Rivers Run Free. It was my first blog tour, so much fun, and the book was one of my favourites of the year so far.
    • What is the most beautiful book that you have bought?
It’s a toss-up between Mythos by Stephen Fry (illustrations!) and my new signed copy of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere.
    • What are 6 books that you want to read by the end of the year?MidYear Collage

These are six of the books that I simply must read before 2018 is out. I’m particularly excited for Transcription and Bridge of Clay, new releases from two of my favourite authors. I can’t wait to get my hands on these and (try to) savour them.
